Let this project begin,..

How to use this map? What’s it all about.

This is first and foremost a canoe trip planning map. I am one, like many others to scour over maps during the cold, snowy off-season planning where I might go that next summer!

Two things you’ll initially notice about this map are,

1/ There have been quite a few forest fires in the last ten years! – and that they are shown on this canoe tripping map!

2/ The usual yellow lines that guide you through the canoe routes on other canoe maps are not shown here – this is on purpose.

To the extent that the MNRF allows forest fires to either be suppressed or simply monitored in regions of Northwestern Ontario, they play a vital role in rejuvenating the boreal forest. Even with all that, there is still a huge park for you to explore! Don’t let that keep you from stopping by!

I never liked being limited by those yellow lines on maps. I always search out other routes/ lakes/ streams to explore. This map includes all the ‘regular’ canoe routes with all the portages but it also includes areas, perhaps off the beaten track that may interest some. Please note, these areas do not have any portages – and (please note) any clearing, flagging or blazing is strictly prohibited except by park staff. Please explore the park free of the constraints of yellow lines! and let’s do it safely.

As they say, ‘the world is your oyster’. You could spend a few nights or weeks upon weeks in the park. The options are endless. There is that much to see!

Let this map be your guide, your inspiration, and your friend as it shows you more each time you view it. Please enjoy responsibly.

P.s. Ensure that you read all the information on the map before your trip, and always consult the park staff too!
